The title of this book’s first edition was The Lottery, or, The Adventures of James Harris. In American folk balladry, James Harris is a demon who bewitches a woman and lures her to drown in the sea. Throughout “The Lottery” too, he appears as a presence that incites malice. It might be seen as a simple bit of the author’s wit, but watching him drift from story to story, changing his guise each time, it is no exaggeration to call this book the adventure tale of a real ‘demon.’ Hunting for James Harris as he reappears transformed into many shapes is yet another delight of reading the book.
